The minute you learned you had to do this foreign language exam, you knew you had to track down Tobi-han. Good luck with that. He seems to always find places around the school that the teachers didn't even know were there, like that time he found a literal pool hidden behind some lockers. How did no one notice that before? Anyway, his campus trekkings are good practice for all of the world traveling he says he's got planned after graduation. In preparation he's already taken every foreign language the school offers and studied Welsh, Tibetan, and Esperanto in his spare time. You've tried to tell him that last one might not really come in handy, but he's having none of it.

How to Play

Studying another language is often a fun, rewarding pursuit, regardless of whatever language you study. I think a lot of us who are fans of anime and manga end up studying Japanese at some point, whether it's just the basics to get by (Watashi wa Arianne desu wwwww) or intense language learning for eventual fluency. One of the first things taught in Japanese is how to read hiragana and katakana, two of the language's writing systems. Let's focus on that second one...

Listed below are the titles of five series written in katakana. From this you will need to figure out the English title of each series. Not familiar with katakana? It's the writing system used to (among other things) transcribe foreign words into Japanese. For example, スレイヤーズ is read as su-re-i-yaa-zu. If you use Japanese pronunciation to read that out loud, you should come up with something that sounds like Slayers. Ta da! You can use this great guide to help you along. I'd also recommend reading the "Small Tsu" section of their hiragana guide, as you'll be seeing that in katakana as well. Each correct answer will be worth 1 mark, for a maximum possible total of 5 marks towards your overall final average.

Series 1

Series 2

*Note that the x in the middle there is not a katakana character; it's an x symbol used in the title*

Series 3

Series 4

Series 5
